As someone who covers AT&T for a major American newspaper, I can say that this book is significant for those who want to learn how this all-powerful, all-encompassing corporate monolith could end up offering the worst customer service of any company in America. These things don’t happen overnight. And this book shows some of the reasons behind the poor corporate culture that can’t seem to fix itself.

Written from the perspective of an industry insider, I found this book to be one of the most frightening accounts of current corporate culture I’ve ever come across. Mr. Spiller has seen first-hand the abuses that are rampant in a closed business culture filled with too many individuals who have become so secure with their lifestyle and position that they feel safe in terrorizing employees, sowing mind-numbing fear among wage earners and those lower on the corporate ladder, demanding unwavering allegiance to often abusive and even illegal internal (and public) company policies and practices, and even demanding sexual favors. And, as we have seen far too many times in the USA and corporate culture around the world, the perpetrators of the abuse continue their employment, salary and benefits while victims are routinely attacked, fired, and further victimized by a culture that appears to have no regard for what most people would consider “good and right” and instead concentrates on whatever they can get away with before they are sued or suffer a repercussion that effects their bottom line. Over and over again I found my inner monologue saying “and that person is STILL WORKING THERE? Sound insane? I’m not making this up and neither is the author. It occurred to me as I read this book that it would be a fine text book for a college course on ethics and morality in US or world corporate culture. I feel it is vitally important that students who aspire to one day become part of a corporate culture get a good, unflinching inside look at what kind of world they want to enter. Doubly so for females. Chapters are written and arranged in a format that would lend itself easily to a well organized college curriculum. I look forward to further work from this author and others like him who dare to stand up to a horrific and abusive corporate entity. You will never look at their advertisements the same way again.

The best thing about this book, is that it will completely open your mind and make you think differently about at&t and large corporations. John Spiller gives incredible detail about his years working for at&t. He gives countless stories of how they have completely come to be a company about making every last penny they can, while not caring at all about their customers or how they effect them in any way. I learned more from this book about business and corporations then I did in business classes. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys reading and wants to learn an incredible amount about a terrible company who just seems to keep getting bigger and richer, regardless of their customer service or work ethic.

“Can We think posssible!”
Can we think possible? This book is a comprehensive presentation of the way it was and the way it is — The best part is the customer service information. I recommend any one in customer service (from service rep to upper management) to read this book. This book will teach us how to be better at customer service.
